Peet and Paloma Solleveld - for years at the top of the ZLU and NPO races!

Peet Solleveld lives in Het Westland, in the village of Maasdijk. He is an enthusiastic fancier and he has his full focus on the longest distances – with the outcome that he has a lot of success at the ZLU and NPO long distance races. His daughter Paloma is, although she has become a grown-up adult, still a special part of this team.

Peet works as a controller of vegetables and fruit in glasshouses that is quite normal in Holland – but the pigeons are always on his mind – so while he is working his mind is on the pigeons – how to plan the breeding or how to prepare the pigeons for the next longdistance race.
Before work and when he is finished working he goes to the lofts, clean them and train the pigeons.

Peet believes in the close relationship with his pigeons – his friends – and that this friendship prepares and rewards his topprizes. He is crazy about his pigeons – as his daughter Paloma, his wife Natasha and Peet say: Pigeons are our passion!
Pigeons are often motivated by the love of their boss instead of by their loft or partner – look at this hen - it is not Peets bird, but a bird that landed at his loft after a tough race. It seems like he has taken good care of this hen ;-)

This contact to the pigeons leads to excellent results. His already long career in the long distance races (morning and midday releases) is marked with many highlights – let’s have a look at some of the results:

As you see the focus is on the ZLU International Longdistance Race where the birds are released in the morning – usually around 7.00. Only the yearlings race one or two races with midday release – usually around 12.00-14.00 – the yearlings participate on these races to learn.

Pigeons:
The pigeons on the lofts descend from the first longdistance birds that Peet bought from Wim Peeman, Middeharnis – a great champ in the 80-ties.
Peet noticed that the lofts of Peeman were not very good – and the pigeons had to live in bad hygiene – that’s why Peet thought that the pigeons were able to survive bad circomstances – they had to be super-healthy. Peet was right – he still have the pigeons descend from RODE WILLEM.
Of course Peet purchases new pigeons – after the Peeman birds, he purchased from the late John Van Holstein (Hein Brasse) and late from the Barcelona specialist Roger Florizoone. These pigeons gave also a lot of success and are still an important part of the foundation.

In the recent years Peet has also got pigeons from other toplofts as Braakhuis, Pronk, Eijerkamp, Van Coppenolle and Kouters.
One of the topbirds on the loft now is JORDAN STAAL NL2008-1454136 – named from the favorite icehockey-player – Peet is a passionate hockey-fan!!
The sire comes from the bloodlines of the Peeman pigeons paired to a topbreeder from Hein Brasse. The dam comes from the golden bloodlines of the Florizoone pigeons.
This cock has already been a gladiator from the start of his overnight long distance races. Several early arrivals and in particular the excellent rankings on the St. Vincent races brought him the beautiful title of the 1. Ace pigeon over 4 years from St. Vincent/Tarbes. This cock can now enjoy his well-earned rest in the breeding loft!

System:
Peet uses the classic widower-system – 36 widowers divided in 4 sections.
These are all at least 2-years-old birds – the yearlings are all played unpaired. During their first year of racing, they have to prove themselves in order to gain a nest in the real loft of the widowers. The yearlings are entered into two NPO-races (overnight races with midday releases) after their training in the regular short and medium long distance races (up to 700 km with early morning release).
The feeding system is advised by Beyers. Peet has good contacts with this company and is always one of the hosts at the exhibitions in the winter time where we meet him every year.
It is important to feed the birds the right mix of proteins, carbohydrates and fatty acids – Peet learns from his conversations with Patrick de Muylder from Beyers.

The 2015 season has just really started for Solleveld – just 2 days ago several pigeons were basketed for 2 important races – 33 yearlings for Cahors and 9 widowers for the legendary flight from Pau.
And it looks like the weekend went well for Solleveld - allthough it was a VERY tought 1000 km race - at the moment it looks like he got his first pigeon as 27. Nat. from Pau !!

First pigeon was FLORIS (his father is a grandson of 1. Nat. Barcelona (Florizoone) and his mother is a granddaughter of BLUE FIRE 3. Nat. Acepigeon Holland 2009) - and his brother already won 62. Nat. Narbonne - so..... the good family continue to give topresults generation after generation!!

We send our congratulations to Peet and his family - and wish them all the best for the rest of the season!
