Sjaak Buwalda - 2015 - the winning streak continues!

The marathon season 2015 has been one of many faces. After a cold preseason, the weather gods must have been in a constant laughter at us pigeon men, taunting us with sun on working days and the reign of Pluvius during the weekend. For the marathon racers of the northern part of Holland the season starts already with their first 500+ miler at the end of Mai, where they end the season also with a 500 miler in September. The long season in which the feathered matadors have to face mountain ranges, the seafront, endless flatlands and their natural enemy the night, as most of these races are afternoon liberations. Top class performances under these extreme conditions, demands a special breed, endurance, intelligence, stamina, the bravery of stealing hours of the night instead of sleeping, racing straight through cold weather fronts instead of flying past them, only done by the exceptional ones.

The Dutch marathon master Sjaak Buwalda experienced another great season with his self-crafted family, based purely on performance birds. Moreover a decade ago constructed from the superior birds Dr. Brockamp, Friedhelm Menne and Harry Brakelé in their heyday’s. Since then pure selection by racing hard style, bringing the exceptional winners to stock, year after year. This brought him the success of today. His todays winning birds are almost all in first or second generation related to upper class ‘Doutzen’  ‘ Deyean’  and ‘ Ivaña’, national winning performers and breeders.

End of May the marathon season took off with the race from Limoges in which a big part of the birds must have been nightracing judging by the average speed other birds did on the same day. Sjaak his new talent ‘ Imaan’  was clocked 05.57 taking 30. National from some 2,400 birds, being a granddaughter to ‘ Doutzen’  ‘ Deyean’  and ‘ Ivaña’. Sjaak was far from happy with this performance and pushed the birds even harder for the national classis from St. Vincent. Pressure was on for this 700 mile classic, it all worked out with the 3yo ‘ Tori’  taking 3. National on a peculiar race with full clouded skies, rain and barely any sight. As yearling she was already showing class and since then being a regular prize winner on the marathon. She was bred from a full brother from ´Doutzen´ when mated to a granddaughter of Dr. Brockamps international Perpignan winner ´Armstrong´. By now next to ´Doutzen´, three of her full brothers have been breeding top 5 National winners, ultimate class. Just one weekend later and it where the 2yo into the battlefield which was theirs to take. An incredible unpredictable race with a cold weather front that had to be taken. Three Buwalda favorites didn’t had any problem with these harsh conditions. It where topbirds ‘ Skyler’ ‘ Hagarson’  and ‘ Rihannon’  taking 5. 10. 17. National from 3,200 birds, being grandchildren ‘ Deyean’ ‘ Ivaña’ and ‘ Estelle.

The only morning liberation from the Rhone valley city of Orange has been a battle against the mistral. As this strong mountainwind is hitting the birds face on, the team is not easily willing to leave the liberation site. A real challenge for the toughest of them all. Sjaak had a sublime performance with his 2yi widowhood hen team, which was in a 500+ mile national for the third time in just six weeks. As always no birds on the day from this site from this 974km race, the team took 19. 26. 32. 54. 69. 92. 117. 145. National against 1,596 birds. Two top hens leading the way with ´Imaan´ and ´Skyler´ who earlier took 5. Nat. Aurillac and 30. Nat. Limoges. Next stop was the national from Bergerac, to be taken with the 3yo. Because of the high temperatures peaking well over 30 degrees it was decided to stop at a closer site than the intented on the national program. Next to that an morningliberation at 10.00 was taking place. It became hard anyway, but the birds seem to adjust well under these circumstances. Within the hour of the national winner it where ´Mila´ and ´Danté´ homing 25. And 27. National against 1,353 birds. These both proven top racers showed class already three weeks earlier from the St. Vincent 700 mile national, when taking 80. and 82. National with also just minutes in between. ´Mila´ is a direct daughter to the famed nightracer ´Drago´ who was clocked from 500 milers at 03.15 and 04.00 in full darkness, being a full brother to founding hen ´Ivaña´ who herself peaked on the 800 miler from Barcelona, all coming from the ´Euro Diamond´ family of Dr. Brockamp. ´Danté´ is a direct son to star of the loft ´Deyean´ when mated to ´Prada´ a top performer with a 5. Nat. Bordeaux on her list, and being a full sister to first lady ´Doutzen´. The offspring of just three founding birds seem to can compete with the best under all circumstances, all terrain, all distances after the real sprinting.

A special race to close the marathon season is the in September held overnight race from Limoges, in which some six specialists clubs from all over Holland participate. A much longer night and shorter day make it a special. Sjaak sent his 3yo for the 4th time in one season to a 500+ miler, now on natural making an excellent result taking 2. 4. 8. 11. against 189 birds with taking 7 prizecards from 8 entries. In just two season the team was succesfull in 8 individual marathon races, selected by the basket only. This will be the team that will participate in next year Barcelona international Sjaak promised.

Direct after the season Sjaak retired his best racers to the stockloft where ´Skyler´ ´Hagarson´ ´Danté´ and ´Mila´ in time will prove to keep the winning streak going for many more years to come.
