Sjaak Buwalda - 2014 - a season of marathon magnificence!

Another great season has passed. A tough season indeed, where you can only the very best in the top of the results. No easy runs this year, no backwind or blow homes but bone hard races. Unfortunately two races being cancelled because of the weather. If it was just we are never going to find out, pigeonpolitics and national boards don’t seem to get aligned here. In circumstances like we had this season the best, most suited pigeons for the marathon stand out, no place for lucky shots. It is these circumstances, that make the marathonistas of Sjaak Buwalda find themselves performing in supreme class.

Like the Billy Ocean song, when the going gets tough, the tough get going, appears to be the slogan for these crusaders of the sun blazed sky. Sjaak had an excellent season again, with not a single race showing any downfall, top prizes in every race and a string of prizecards in most races. Let’s take a look at the birds that stood out in 2014.

The season started with the semi classic from Limoges in which Sjaak send his team of 2yo to the scene. First arrival winning 17. national was the later crowned ace bird of the national marking station, Megan. She was bred from ‘Donar’ x ‘Solange’ making her a granddaughter of legend founders ‘Deyean’ , ‘Ivaña’ and ‘Doutzen’. Second bird and finishing 32. national was for ‘Adrine’ daughter to ‘Osiris’ x ‘Ivaña’ with ‘Osiris’ being a direct son to ‘Deyean’.

Second marathon was the supreme classical national from St.Vincent, being on the calendar since the ’20 of the last century. First arrival taking 33. national was widower ‘Hagarson’ direct son to ‘Hagar’ x ‘Esmée’ making him a grandson to ‘Deyean’ ‘Ivaña’ the mother being a tophen herself and granddaughter ‘Doutzen’. In this extremely hard edition it was the 2yo supertalented 2yo hen named ‘Zimra’ taking 49. national, being a daughter to ‘Ramses’ x ‘Mégane’ making her a granddaughter ‘Deyean’ and ‘Doutzen’ crossed with the very best of AP Overwater.

At the semi classis from Ruffec it where the 2yo hens again being send for their second run of the season. Leading lady of the Buwalda team was the very talented ‘Gucci’ winning 27. national, being a direct daughter to legendary nightracer ‘Drago’ x tophen ‘Fabrizia. Second to come was the black lady named ‘Querelle’ a direct daughter to Buwalda national top 10 racers and topbreeders ‘Maicon’ x ‘Estelle’.

Then came the weeks of the cancelled races in which Sjaak decided to send a team of 10 birds on natural to the international classis from Marseille. First arrival finishing 53. national with the hens was ‘Délicia’ direct daughter to the full brother of Doutzen named ‘Avatar’ x ‘Geniva’ the supreme daughter to ‘Deyean’ x ‘Estélle’. On her debut the 2yo hen by the name of ‘Etain’ managed to peak at 82. national with the hens, being bred from ‘Ramses’ x ‘Mégane’ thus a granddaughter to phenomenon’s ‘Doutzen’ and ‘Deyean’.

The complete team of 2yo where to be send to Cahors at the end of July. In this race it where the cocks taking the leading positions. Taking 13. national is was ‘Dzeko’ to show his class and high potential for his to career to come. He was bred from ‘Montender’ supreme son to ‘Deyean’ x top racer ‘Katusja’. Second arrival taking 66. national was the stunning ‘Negredo’ direct son to ‘Osiris’ being another of the supreme sons of ‘Deyean’ x founding star ‘Ivaña’.

At the end of the normal marathonseason the yearling hens where to be tested on their first ever real long distance race, an exam which they passed cum laude. Another pearl to the crow making her first star appearance on the national classic from Bergerac. Finishing 7. overall against 3,400 yearlings the excellent ‘Tequila’ being a direct daughter top star of the loft ‘Deyean’ proved the sheer class of her father, when he was mated to an orginal AP Overwater half sister to his famed ‘Ferrari’. Taking 55. overall yearlings was the red checker ‘Kathe’ granddaughter to founding stars ‘Deyean’ ‘Estelle’ and ‘Doutzen’ .

By far the best reference of the 2014 with Buwalda birds came from Auke Rekker of Berlikum with his unique yearling hen named ‘Roos’. She delivered two 1. NPO wins on the nationals from Ruffec and Bergerac, being a granddaughter the 1. national winner for Sjaak Buwalda ‘Melinda’ which is a direct daughter to foundings stars ‘Doutzen’ and ‘Deyean’. On the sire side of ‘Roos’ pedigree we find the names of ‘Maicon’ and ‘Aprillia’.

On the Danish one loft race 2014 it was the bird named ‘Sandnes’ which finished 2. in the 400 km final for Trygve Tjessem from Norway. She was bred from a direct Buwalda son of the magnificent ‘Deyean’.

The magnificent long distance hens ‘Lilly’ on the lofts of Demis Baja, on the small island Gozo, finished 2. in the Malta federation national race from Bari 2014 against 3,309 birds. With under 10% returns after a very hard 600km race. This tophen was bred from a direct Buwalda daughter to St.Vincent stars ‘Maicon’ x ‘Estélle’ . She furthermore won 49. Nat. St. Eufemia 4,926 birds, 57. Nat. Metaponto 4,063 birds in previous weeks. Keep in mind that these birds have to cross a 100km open see to reach home at the end of the race.

By now you should be convinced of the sheer quality of this marathon elite, to see the whole team being build on just a handful of supreme class founders. They where the Buwalda national winners between 2006 and 2010. Ever since then they prove their outstanding class in producing winner after winner on the marathons of the sky.
